Outreach & Knowledge Transfer

Knowledge Transfer focuses on the dissemination of research-based knowledge, expertise and skills between the project and the users of its results (e.g. Policy makers, advisory bodies, research managers, conservation and user groups, management bodies, all at European, regional and national level).

By creating a dialogue between these communities, knowledge transfer and dissemination helps research to influence policy and practice.

The key goals of GreenSeas are to contribute to the development of global plankton and plankton ecology datasets. This will be achieved through collation and analysis of historical data, extending existing databases of phytoplankton, zooplankton, bacterio-plankton and other environmental parameters with a focus on the Southern Ocean. And, by improving the technology for accessing historical plankton and associated environmental data sets, along with earth observation data and simulation output.

To support these important goals GreenSeas dissemination activities focus specifically on:

  • Forming collaborative links with other plankton surveys
  • Developing tools to transfer knowledge acquired during GreenSeas to user communities, including web tools and targeted documents such as fact sheets (see below)
  • Coordination of a user group to provide advice and feedback to the project
  • Disseminating knowledge to the next generation of scientists through a Summer School exploring data analysis, modelling and indicator development skills
  • Providing young researchers from developing nations with sea going experience
  • Providing a Knowledge Transfer Contacts data base
